Altered Arts Magazine: Quick Pendant

Welcome!  This is my first post to share for the Altered Arts Magazine Design Team this month. I'm excited to be back online and apologize for my absence.  I had an injury on Jan 28th and I am still recovering; nicely but slowly.

This cute pendant was created with a glass bottle stopper from an oil and reed diffuser.

Supplies:
Glass bottle stopper
12 gauge copper wire
glass beads
leather cord with closures
wire cutters and needle nose pliers.

Here is a close-up of the beads I used, they heart tear drop or almost heart shaped with little wire loops.

DIRECTIONS:
1. Clean the glass stopper thoroughly of any oil from the diffuser to make it safe to handle.
2. Cut a 6" piece of wire and string beads on to it.
3. Wrap the beaded wire around the first indent in the neck of the stopper and twist tightly with needle nose pliers.  Trim the twist to about 1/4" then fold over in the back.
4. Wrap the copper wire along the top of the neck of the stopper until it looks solid.  (about 9 inches)
5. Use the wire to create a loop in the back, twist and secure.
6. Attach the leather cord with closures.

P.S. The kittens are a bit stir crazy from winter and have missed being in the studio too. As soon as I got upstairs, they were franticly chasing the wire I was trying to twist and that lovely box of beads is scattered all over the floor.  oh well!  It's good to be back!

Altered Arts Magazine: Repurposing

Fall is in the air! Today I'm repurposing an old fabric swatch book.
Of course, I have found many uses for the lovely fabric it once held: Scrapbook embellishments, collage, quilts, applique and more. The books themselves are so durable, there is much more life to them.

Ideas:
(1) This note pad, decorated for fall but can easily be refilled and the flower changed time after time. (instructions below)
(2) Decorate the top/front, spray the long area with chalk board paint and add a little chalk holder.
(3) Decorate the long writing area around the border only, then cover it with laminate to use as a dry erase board, attach a marker on a string at the top.

Supplies:
Decorative paper (Jeanine DeOre digi kit "William")
Fabric Flower
Ribbon
lined note pad
3/8" and Super Sticky sheets adhesive
Liquid glue or hot glue

Directions:
1. Disassemble the fabric book and remove the fabric swatches.
2. Untie the hanger that came with the book by unknotting it inside the cover or snipping off as little as possible to remove it for the next step.
3. Cut decorative paper to fit the panels on the cover and adhere with super sticky sheet. I used one piece to cover the front and top, making it about 1" longer than needed so I could over lap the large panel on the back side.
4. Pierce the holes where the chord hanger was and put the handle back into place.
5. Cut a lined pad of paper to size and adhere inside using super sticky sheet adhesive.
6. Wrap the ribbon all the way around the project, meeting on the front side under where the flower will be placed. Adhere with 3/8 super sticky tape.
7. Glue the fabric flower into place with strong liquid glue or hot glue.

Welcome to my first Altered Arts Magazine Design Team post for August!

Today I've created a pendant from a broken CD which, to me, resembles an Asian fan.

5. Brush random blotches of Perfect Pearls colors onto the surface of the project. Spritz with water to set.
6. Dip the bottom edge back into the UTEE and immediately into a tray of the Bedazzles.
7. Coat the entire project and attach the bail with 3d Crystal Lacquer.

Altered Arts Magazine: ATC Magnet

Hello and welcome to my Altered Arts Magazine Design Team post.

I've been having some colorful fun with collage. I turned a 9x12" sheet of music into a collage and made multiple ATC panels from it with words that inspire, then used one to make a refrigerator magnet.

"Inspiring ATC/Fridge Magnet"

SUPPLIES:
FONTS by duetica.com
Adirondak dye ink: Lettuce, Clover, Sail Boat Blue, Lettuce Color Wash (Ranger Ink)
Memory Mist Blue Hawaii
Versa Mark Pad
Silver Embossing Powder
CR 1,2 and 3 and TN5 Alcohol Markers (Spectrum Noir)
Periwinkle, Lake and Butternut acrylic paint (ECO Green Crafts)
Butterfly Stamp from Butterfly Post Collection Eco Green Crafts
Flourish by Stampin Up!
Small glass beads-frosted mix by Create A Craft
PC AND PRINTER, Sheet music-miscellaneous
Drill or Dremel tool, beads and wire, magnet.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Select a page sheet music (9x12)
2. Add 3 colors of acrylic paint randomly with a brush, let some of the music notes peek through.

When I make ATCs, I'm usually creating multiples of the same design for swapping, so I like to lay them all out at once. The blocks I used in my document are 2x3 inches so I can layer it onto something else. For the magnet, I used a piece of Stampbord 2 1/2 x 3 1/2.

3. Create a document the same size as your project and insert text.
4. Stamp flowers using the "huffing" method. HUFFING: use watercolor markers to color directly on the stamp. When finished "huff" your breath onto the stamp to moisten the pigment, then stamp onto your project. Use a sheet of paper as a mask so that you won't stamp into another square.
5. Add color to the flowers with alcohol pens.
6. Stampflourish with Lettuce Adirondak ink.
7. Stamp the flourish with Clover Adirondak ink. (bottom right)
8. Spray the entire project with a light coat Krylon Matte Finish. Let dry completely.
9. Print your word document onto your project.
10 Stamp the butterfly using Sail Boat Blue Adirondak ink.
11. Heat set the entire project and spray again with Krylon Matte Finish.
12. Cut squares apart.
13 Spray the Stampbord with Lettuce Color Wash and Blue Hawaii Memory Mist. Heat set.
14. Stamp the Stampbord with Versa Mark and emboss with silver embossing powder.
15. Adhere the paper square to the front of the stampbord.
16. Use a drill or dremel tool to pierce a small hole in the bottom right corner.
17. Attach the large beads to wire and twist the end, place through the hole and secure.
18. Apply glue to cover the hole and sprinkle with small glass beads.
19. Attach magnet to the back.

Thank you so much for visiting, I hope you enjoyed the project. Please be sure to visit Altered Arts Magazine to see the wonderful project ideas they have to offer. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Until next time, make art every day!
